Routine Rhythms!

Pattern can be regular or irregular, organic or geometric, structural or decorative, positive or negative, and repeating or random. It is an interesting visual language to create attractive scenes, and has been my inspiration to create a story.

The idea started with my everyday repeating life, and I found the concept of ‘Repetition’ is a common ground between the pattern and everyday life.

So, what if the normal actions in our daily life could turn into rhythmical and enjoyable moments with patterns?

The entire goal of this thesis is to explore various moving patterns using various mediums and creating a short film with visual interests through those patterns.

Have a rhythmic day!

Initial Animatic.

I picked some everyday activities that could make some interesting rhythms using patterns and distributed those activities on beat without any melodic elements.

Abstraction.

Many abstract artists inspired me to create the patterns in this piece. Jagged outlines and bold colors from Henri Matisse and Herold Krisel, split-screen from Ellsworth Kelly, and simple geometric shapes from Josef Albers. Personally, abstracting the objects is a very fun way to create attractive scenes, adding more personal styles.

The most interesting part of making this piece was thinking about how much should I abstract each object. Each abstract shape was created based on how it sounds and moves, highlighting each object’s characteristics.

Adding Textures.

The textures with moving brushstrokes were used to convey the energy of the rhythmic moments and to reflect the environments that change over time. After creating moving textures in Adobe Photoshop, I brought them into After Effect to animate and finalize the scenes.

<Routine Rhythms> is a mixed-media short film consisted of two different parts, 2d graphic animation and live-action/stop-motion with real sets. These live-action/stop-motion scenes are more literal rather than abstract, supporting the story of other abstract shots.

Making Paper Sets.
